do know that he was from a providence in the Roman Empire called Gallia Narbonensis and was a teacher in Milan. In 283, Sebastian entered the Roman Army under Emperor Carinus to assist with the martyrs without them knowing he was a Christian and he was even promoted to a Captain because of his courage. But, despite his best effort, Sebastian couldn't keep his true religion from Diocletian and he was sentenced to death because of it. Sebastian was then tied to a post and archers shot at him until he was "as full of arrows as an urchin (hedgehog) is full of pricks" and he was then left to die. Sebastian didn't die though. He was nursed back to health after being found by St. Irene of Rome. Sebastian then went to a staircase where Diocletian was supposed to pass and harangued him for his cruelties towards Christians. Diocletian was astonished because he was told that Sebastian was dead but he still sentenced Sebastian to death again and he was beaten with cudgels until he was really dead and was then thrown into the sewer of Rome. He was then found by a lady named Lucina who buried him in the catacombs at the entrance of the cemetery of Callixtus where the Basilica of St. Sebastian stands today. Sebastian was one of the earliest Christian martyrs and is now one of the most popular saints among young men today.
